Green Radio, Living With Ed, Proposed Legislation
by JANE BOGNER
SUNDAY, September 23, 2007
There are many of us that still like to listen to radio. I
prefer to listen to KDFC, the classical music station, but many
friends like talk radio. Maybe I’ll get hooked on a new green
talk show called Green 960 located at 960AM. KQKE radio (www.green960.com)
has added an environmental talk show that airs weekdays between
3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. The first afternoon that I listened,
host Ginnie Waters interviewed experts in car sharing, glass
tiles, and reclaiming neighborhoods through cleaning, painting
and planting.
Green Seed Radio is sponsored by the Green Building Exchange in
Redwood City. This exchange is a year-round trade show dedicated
to environmentally conscious builders, developers and consumers.
Sierra Club also has a spot on Green 960. Air time is Saturday
at 3:30 p.m.
Living with Ed is back
I have great news, Living with Ed is back on the air for its
second season on HGTV. This weekly living green program is
slotted for Sunday and Monday at 10:30 p.m.
This season, Ed Begley and his wife Rachelle Carson continue
greening their modest home in Studio City and are peeking inside
homes of other Hollywood personalities who are looking for
advice from Begley on becoming green or to show off their
eco-friendly additions.
Actress and model Cheryl Tiegs showed off her two Toyota Prius’
and the environmental tile she has picked for her kitchen
counter top and flooring. One concern was about an indoor plant
that wasn’t getting enough light. An easy solution was to
install a Solar Tube (www.solartube.com)
that easily puts light into dark spaces. Cheryl is also
considering adding a few solar panels and researching non
chlorine solutions for her swimming pool.
Another Begley friend contacted Low Impact Living (www.lowimpactliving.com)
to conduct a green house audit. After the audit, the homeowner
put compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in her 110 light fixtures.
(So how many light fixtures do you have in your house, I ask?)
This year, Ed is continuing to green his home by installing a
small vertical wind turbine to augment his solar panels in his
quest to be off the grid. At the same time, Rachelle worked with
a contractor to install three solar tubes in dark areas of their
house. One tube used an existing ceiling light hole in a dark
hallway. A new fixture was reinstalled in the tube for light at
night.
Ed and Rachelle generously share tips and practical ideas on how
anyone can live a greener lifestyle. It is a serious but fun
show to watch with the banter between Rachelle and Ed. Begley
noted in the press release: “The fact that the two of us have
not killed each other and that we are still happily married
amazes us daily.”
The show started the end of August and previous episodes are
available on
www.livingwithed.net. This web site is loaded with links to
the products and companies that are featured on the show.
Vallejo Garbage Updates
Starting in August, Vallejo Garbage Service (VGS) started
picking up yard waste weekly. I checked on the curbside motor
oil and filter program and learned that the containers will be
picked up along side any of the three toters. Be sure to secure
the jug’s lid and the bag that holds the filter then place it on
the curb so the driver can see it. To order jugs and bags, call
552-3110.
Lisa LeFebvre, VGS Recycling Manager reminded me that they will
have their annual Children’s coat drive this fall. So as you are
cleaning out the closets getting new clothes for the school
year, please save children’s coats for this great cause.
